SOLID FOUNDATIONS FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION COURSE

After a successful year long trial the Academy has announced that the BTEC First Diploma in Construction (Level 2) is here to stay. That’ll be music to the ears of Head of Construction, Lee Farnell who over the past 12 months has been steadily building himself a reputation for enjoyable interactive teaching.

“It’s fantastic news for everyone associated with the course,” said Lee, who spent 18 years as a joiner and 4 years teaching construction at a vocational centre before joining the SCA staff.

“I’ve tried to develop student understanding and appreciation of each construction trade through practical skill development and regular site visits, From the feedback I’ve been getting it’s been successful in achieving that goal, The students are more confident in their ability and I have every confidence that they will go onto successful careers in the industry,” he added.

The course has six units; Health and Safety, Introduction to Construction, three units of Carpentry/ Joinery and a taster unit in Bricklaying, tiling and plastering.    One of construction’s most promising students is Louis Morrow, who is currently studying for his BTEC in Construction, specialising in joinery. Far from being certain before, Louis is now convinced a career in construction is for him.

“After Year 12 I needed more subjects on my timetable so I tried construction and really enjoyed it,” said Louis. “The tools are great and the classroom has loads of space which is useful when you’re working on large objects like door frames. The course has made me realize that I’m creative with my hands and I’m looking forward to carrying it on next year,” he added.
