PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Hands on learner, Nathan Brimelow has always felt more comfortable developing skills in a practical way. So, when he decided to visit the Sixth Form for an open day he was drawn to the BTEC National Diploma in Sport because it offered a gradual progression from having a desire to develop a career in sport to actually possessing the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the sector.

Having spent the past 18 months receiving a high degree of one-to-one tuition from our sports staff Nathan has progressed extremely well and now sits in the very promising position of having a distinction – 3 AS equivalent at A-Level - with just a few units left to complete.

“The great thing about the BTEC diploma is that it has enabled me to constantly assess how well I am doing. If you have a bad module it motivates you to do better in your next one and you always have the option to revisit old work and improve upon it. That sort of learning has been perfect for me and the Sixth Form has supported me all the way.”

A self-confessed sports junkie, Nathan watches and plays any sport suggested to him! He has recently made applications to study Physical Education has his heart set on studying at Liverpool John Moores University where he has recently accepted an offer to start his studies in September 2009.

SPLIT DECISION

Like Nathan, 18-year-old Laura Smart has submitted a UCAS application but unlike Nathan she has split her learning between a BTEC National Certificate in Sport and A-Levels in Human Biology and English Lit. She has now accepted an offer to study for a degree in Sports Science at the University of Central Lancashire, before eventually completing a PGCE and becoming a fully qualified PE teacher.

“I’ve had a fantastic time so far. The Sixth Form team have been really helpful throughout and I’ve made a lot of friends. I chose to split my studying between a BTEC National Certificate and A-Levels because I thought that if I wanted to ultimately become a teacher it would be useful to combine practical sports coaching skills with the more formal learning of Human Biology and English Lit.”

“I have to say though, I do prefer the practical learning of the BTEC because I am not as good in exams as I am in coursework and practical assessments. It has also maintained my interest because all the sections have been different and I have been able to track my progress as I’ve gone along,” added Laura.
