Haiti Appeal Brings Out the Best

This week Salford City Academy students, Jack Roberts and Hanna Williams, proudly presented a cheque for £358.97 to the Eccles Rotary Club President Harry Pickles to pay for a Shelter Box for Haiti.

Following the plight of the Haiti earthquake survivors, Salford City Academy set students a challenge to raise funds towards the appeal made by the Eccles Rotary Club. The contribution will provide a pack of shelter, cooking implements, food and other basic needs for a family in Haiti following the country's devastating earthquake.

Salford City Academy set all mentor groups throughout the school a challenge to compete to raise the most money for Haiti in return for 250 House Points. All students belong to four Houses - Bridgewater, Joule, Williamson and Lowry - and earn rewards for achievement, behaviour and attendance.

A great number of mentor groups took part and thanks to all their hard work and effort the school raised £358.97. As Eccles Rotary Club President Elect, Academy teacher Julie Larkinson presented the school's efforts to the Club and they kindly agreed to put up the rest of the money towards the £500 Shelter Box.

Julie Larkinson, Director of Work Related Learning, said "We are extremely proud of the effort our pupils made for this fund. It's a great opportunity for them to appreciate all their hard work as well as we will get a code for the Shelter Box so that we can track and follow it to its final destination in Haiti."

Harry Pickles, Eccles Rotary Club President said "These young people have made a tremendous effort in raising all this money and we're delighted to make up the full cost of the shelter box.  This will provide everything a family of 10 people will need to live and without it they'd have nothing else; so this fundraising effort really makes a difference."

The winner of the fundraising challenge was 7LNI. Enrichment Co-ordinator Natalie Ingham's mentor group sold handmade cards, bookmarks and key rings all created by 7LNI themselves, alongside jewellery and hair accessories produced in Enrichment. The group raised an impressive £91.63!

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the staff and pupils for supporting and contributing to our fundraising for the Haiti Appeal. Well done 7LNI - I am really proud of you all!" said Natalie Ingham.

Salford City Academy saw some fantastic fundraising activities, such as 9BAD who sold raffle tickets to win a giant teddy bear and 8JLR who hosted a penalty shoot-out.
