SCA HOSTS NORTH WEST FUNDRAISING PRESENTATION
On 9th September 2009, Salford City Academy played proud host to the fundraising presentation for the Greggs Children's Cancer Research Fun Run. At the ceremony, an impressive £38,500 cheque was presented to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital by Greggs the Baker, event sponsor.
The annual event which took place at Heaton Park in May 2009 saw 1510 runners from 25 local Salford and Bury schools, as well as several local companies compete in a sponsored 5m run and a 1m family fun run.
Salford City Academy pupils Emma Copeland, Year 10, and Thomas Williams, Year 9, were invited to attend the presentation. The pupils were also presented with a certificate for the school's fantastic fundraising efforts.
Emma Copeland said "It's the third time I've done the run; I really enjoy doing it and raising money for charity. This year a group of my friends got together and we did it in our pyjamas! I'd recommend it to everyone for next year because its great fun, there's loads of music on and you get a great goodie bag full of cakes and pastries at the end of it."
During the presentation day, Salford City Academy mingled with other schools and companies who competed in the races, as well as parents and friends of children affected by brain tumours. All guests enjoyed a sumptuous buffet catered by Gregg the Bakers and learnt about how all the money raised will be spent.
Money raised is to fund research carried out by Dr. Eddy Estiln to develop interventions to improve memory loss in children who've had brain tumours, and also towards more traditional research into preventing cancer.
Elizabeth Haddock, Principal said "We are delighted and honoured to host this cheque presentation which sees money going towards a very worthwhile cause. We'd love to take part again next year - here's hoping for good weather!!"
Mel Gerson, fundraising representative for Greggs said "I'd like to say thanks to Elizabeth Haddock and Salford City Academy for their continued support and generous hospitality in hosting the Greggs cheque presentation event."
The Greggs Children's Cancer Research Fun Run is now in its 7th year in North West, and to date has raised in excess of £220,000 for Children's Cancer Research. Event organisers Greggs provide entertainment and refreshments on the day as well as medals and goodie bags for all participants - all in aid of raising awareness and funds for children's cancer research.
