Design & Technology Department
Design and Technology is about developing innovative products to be manufactured and sold to consumers, which in turn allows our pupils the opportunity to explore the possibilities of the future. Here at the academy we use wood, metal, plastics, food and graphic materials to teach design and technology through a ‘design and make' process which follows the Design and Technology National Curriculum.
The department has two fully equipped Food rooms and two Resistant Materials workshops with a full range of machinery including the latest Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing equipment.
ICT plays an important role within the subject. We reinforce the use of databases for investigations and analysis, along with spreadsheets for costing and quantities of materials in order to meet the requirements of potential clients. Students will use software packages to help with their projects and be taught to use Computer Aided Design to accurately produce 2D and 3 D drawings which can then be translated into accurate prototypes and simulate mass production.
As designers it is important to be able to communicate ideas. Therefore the production of high quality visuals is essential and will enable designs to be translated into working models.
