Religious Studies

Religious Studies at Salford City Academy is a lively, thought- provoking, challenging and relevant subject. Within lessons, learners will have the opportunity to discuss their ideas, opinions and beliefs, so allowing everyone to be involved in learning.

While extending their knowledge of world faiths and their understanding of how religion can and does motivate people's behaviour, learners will also develop such vital skills as investigation, analysis and application. All pupils study Religious Studies to GCSE Level.

During lower school, learners study the five main world religions, with the largest share of time given to the study of Christianity. Salford City Academy encourages students to see the world through the eyes of other people from different backgrounds. However, we also emphasise that the UK is a nation with a diversity of faiths, while recognising that a large number of the population follow no religious tradition. Religious Education is an opportunity for young people to develop their own ideas, while understanding the views of others.
At Key Stage 4, there is a change of approach in the way we teach and learn in Religious Studies. We focus on modern ethical issues and encourage out Year 10s and 11s to hold an opinion on challenging topics, such as medical ethics, war and peace, ways of protesting and when we should stand up for what we believe in. Each student’s opinion is valued, while we teach them to recognise how there are always alternative view points.
Our Religious Studies department has been involved in many activities outside the classroom, ranging from pilgrimages to work with primary schools, from theatrical productions to regular religious services. We hope we reflect the colour and enthusiasm that religion can bring to people’s lives.
