Enterprise Day - Sing for Salford - 22 November 2010

Salford City Academy year 10 students took part in an Enterprise Day, entitled Sing for Salford in which they had to come up with a Christmas song for charity.  Salford Business Education Partnership organised this day with the help of Julie Larkinson (Director of Work Related Learning and Enterprise) to help the students understand how a business runs and the work involved in producing an end product, in this case a CD for charity.

The students were split into groups of 4 or 5 and given a briefing at the start of their session by Nichola Morrish or Laura Johnson from the BEP to give them an idea of what they were going to do during the morning or afternoon.

To start with they had a brainstorming session with their team to discuss what kind of song they were going to do, a carol, rock or a rap, and then which charity they were going to donate the takings to and make note of any good ‘words’ they could include in their piece of work for the CD.

They then had to decide which of them was going to be the Marketing Manager, Production Manager, Design Manager and Fundraising Manager.  Each of these roles had a written guide to show them what their job involved and what they would have to do in their team.

Each team were given a budget of £1,000,000 Salford dollars to cover the costs of everything.  They had to write down all the money spent on things like advertising and designing the CD cover,  Cheques had to be wrote out for advertising etc and given to Nichola who was acting as the finance officer.

They were all allowed to use a computer to research for a charity or to design their CD covers and also for their advertising campaigns, and to print/type out the words to their song, to put inside their CD cover.

Towards the end of the sessions the teams were asked to get everything ready for their presentation.  Each team was asked to stand at the front of the class and each of them had to speak about what part they played in putting the CD together.  Some of the teams sang or read out the words to their song.

Each team was judged on their pitch about their song in the hope that they would win a Trafford Centre voucher.

The students worked well as teams and produced some very eye catching CD covers and good advertising campaigns to help sell their CD.
