British Sign Language Course - September 2010

All year 11's students studying the child care course at KS4 and KS5 are only 5 weeks into the BSL level 1 course and already they are able to fingerspell the entire alphabet and know a large range of vocabulary that links to the weather, asking directions, transport, time, money, all the numbers and many many more words like hello and goodbye, wait, birthday, start and finish.  The list could go on.

They are also learning about careers that would benefit from the use of sign language, especially in child care.  The lady that is teaching them is actually deaf herself and so to speak to her they have to use sign language.

All of the students are on target and will be sitting their first assessment this month (October), these assessments are filmed to prove they can have a converstaion using sign language only.  Their tutor is deaf and has no speech, which means that the students have to learn quickly in order for them to communicate with her.
