A change to year 10 work experience! - June 2009

Internal Filler

This year there was some exciting changes to year 10 work experience. Those who have ever taken part in a work experience program will know that the understanding of the work place and the skills gained from these placements can prove very important. It is with this is mind that we believe it to be vital to provide a work experience week which will support this learning as best we can.

The idea of the new concept for work experience not only gives students an idea of what it is like to work but also how you would get a job and what the students options are regarding different job areas. The new concept also better supports the students which we believe will lead to a more effective week.

The students are given the option of ten different job areas and are asked to choose the one that interests them the most, for example construction or creative and media. This becomes their unique work experience group and along with the other students who have picked that area they will discover what that area of work is like.

Each group is linked to a company. For example the Marketing and Advertising group were linked to a TBWA in Didsbury. During the week they spent two days in the work place and experienced what working in their job area would be like.

One day of the work experience week also involved a university visit. The reason behind this was to look at the options available to students with regards to getting a job and career choices. During the week the students also spent time working on CV’s and application forms and having a mock interview to help the students to prepare for any job interviews they may have in the future.

The final day of work experience week involves a presentation day. The students in their groups were asked to prepare a stall or presentation about the job area they have been attached to for the week. This meant we had ten different stalls or presentations, produced by the students, about ten different areas of work. This provided  great career fair and the students were able to discover from their peers about the other jobs and areas of work.

We believe this new concept better supports the students in year ten and provides a valuable incite into the working environment and career choices.
