E-Safety Competition Winner

Internal Filler

Congratulations to Kelsey Cromwell, Year 7, who has been picked by Miss Bailey, ICT Subject Leader, as winner of the e-Safety Design-a-Desktop competition.  Kelsey's design was picked for its very simple and effective with a strong e-Safety message.

The competition was in aid of Safer Internet Day 2010.  To celebrate Safer Internet Day 2010, Salford City Academy held our own e-Safety Week in February. Safer Internet Day promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.

The campaign theme this year is ‘Think B4 You Post'.  New technologies enable children and young adults to post information, pictures and videos online through a blog or social networking site or distribute such material via their mobile phones instantly to a large audience.

Salford City Academy wanted to support the campaign to highlight the risks our pupils face with this sort of online activity from bullies and predators; we also wanted to make our pupils aware that parents, teachers and employers can access their information which could have an adverse impact.

We organised several activities for pupils to empower them to manage their online identity, including publishing pictures and videos in a responsible way i.e. using privacy settings offered by social networking services and selecting friends online they know and can trust.

We launched the e-Safety competition, inviting pupils to design a desktop for our schools' computers.  The desktop design had to include the strap-line ‘Think before you post'.

As the winner, Kelsey will enjoy the top prize of £50 Trafford Centre vouchers and her design will be rolled out across all our schools' computers for a term.

Niamh Canavan, Year 9, came in 2nd with her simple and effective design and Joshua Forster, Year 13, produced a design that won him 3rd place, he used a cartoon strip to convey the e-safety message and the design had a great layout and a strong message.  All entries were to a very high standard. Thanks to everyone who took part.
