Pupil Pulls No Punches
Cameron McDonald, Year 7, proves to be a new sporting talent in boxing, recently winning his very first fight and is poised for his next!
Cameron was lured into boxing when he started watching it on the TV with his dad and sister’s boyfriend. “I used to watch boxing on the TV and fancied having a go myself,” said Cameron.
As his sister’s boyfriend used to box himself, he took Cameron along to meet his old coach Barry Edwards at his Irlam club. Barry became Cameron’s coach and he has since moved to join Barry’s new club in Eccles, Barton Athletic Club. Cameron has been boxing since he was 8 years old.
Cameron trains 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and they do different things each time which makes it fun and interesting.
“We keep fit by doing circuit training, spar with each other and our coach and also learn tactics for the boxing ring!” says Cameron.
On Friday 20th November, watched by his family and Miss Ingham, his mentor, Cameron competed in his first amateur fight. It was a North West competition held in Warrington, and Cameron came away with his first win along with a trophy and certificate.
Cameron says “I’m pleased that I won my first fight and I’m proud of all the training I’ve done – it involves a lot of commitment and I’ve made my family proud too.”
Natalie Ingham, Cameron’s mentor and Enrichment Coordinator said “He was really nervous at first when I arrived but in the ring he was a star!!” With his next big fight booked in on 18th March in Middlesbrough, Cameron feels positive considering he has one fight under his belt already!
By its nature the sport requires dedication, discipline, and respect in both training and competition. If you’re interested and want more information, visit http://www.bartonac.org/home/boxing
